How Opioids became a National Public Health Crisis

November 19, 2020 | 5:30 to 7 p.m. (PDT)
Live on ZOOM

Presented by Dr. Jeffrey Talbot, PhD
Vice President for Research and Dean, College of Graduate Studies
Roseman University of Health Sciences

Opioids—either prescription medications or an illicit drug—present one of the most serious drug crisis the US has ever experienced. In the late 1990s, increased prescription of opioid medications led to widespread misuse of both prescription and non-prescription opioids as the addictive potential of these medications became clear. In 2017 HHS declared a public health emergency. All of us, including doctors, pharmacists, parents, teachers, advocates, mental health providers, law enforcement, and others—have a role to play in combating this crisis. By working together, communities can prevent and treat overdoses and ensure safe opioid prescribing. In this session, meet Dr. Jeffrey Talbot, Vice President for Research and Dean, College of Graduate Studies whose research interests lie in understanding drug addiction as well as depression. Dr. Talbot will talk about how Opioids became misused, how these drugs work, and what we can do to work together to combat this public health crisis.
