Supplements seem to be growing in popularity, but unregulated by the FDA, many continue to feel uncertain of their claims. This flu season, supplements were heavily marketed, think Zicam and Oscillococcinum among others. What is the efficacy of these supplements? Increasingly, consumers are reading about the benefits of various supplements like curcumin and fish oil to address a host of health care ailments, like inflammation, cholesterol, mood, immune and metabolic function. Who produces these supplements? Which are worth considering? What kinds of research exists to validate their claims? What risks exist in taking them? Dr. Manas Mandal, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Researcher, will walk us through the divergence of over the counter and prescription medications, and supplements, and attempt to answer some of the difficult questions that exist.
